Living with ME/CFS: Why Survival Is Just the Beginning

If you are reading this, you probably know what it means to fight for every single day. To negotiate with your body. To celebrate being able to make a cup of tea as a victory. Living with ME/CFS or Long Covid means redefining what “functioning” looks like – and that is one of the hardest things a person can do.

But here is something I have come to believe deeply, after years of living with ME/CFS myself: survival is not the endpoint. It is the starting point. That is the core idea behind my ebook Beyond Survival.

But here is something I have come to believe deeply, after years of living with ME/CFS myself: survival is not the endpoint. It is the starting point. That is the core idea behind my ebook Beyond Survival.

The Invisible Weight of Chronic Illness

ME/CFS and Long Covid are not just physical conditions. They affect every dimension of life – relationships, identity, plans, dreams. The person you were before the illness often feels like a stranger. And the medical system, which still largely fails to understand these conditions, can make you feel invisible.

You are not invisible. Your experience is real, valid, and deserves to be understood – not just by doctors, but by those around you and by yourself.

💡 Tip

You are not invisible. Your experience is real, valid, and deserves to be understood – not just by doctors, but by those around you and by yourself.

What “Beyond Survival” Actually Means

Beyond survival does not mean recovering to your former self. It does not mean pushing through the illness or ignoring your limits. It means finding a life that is yours – within your real, current capacity.

This might look like:

  • Finding a pacing strategy that actually works for your life
  • Rebuilding a sense of agency and self-efficacy
  • Discovering what still brings meaning, even on hard days
  • Feeling less alone in your experience
  • Understanding your nervous system – and learning to work with it, not against it

Pacing: The Most Important Tool You May Not Be Using Effectively

Energy management – pacing – is widely recommended for ME/CFS and Long Covid. But most resources explain the concept without showing you how to actually implement it in daily life, with a dysregulated nervous system, variable symptoms, and the very real pressure to function.

Effective pacing means:

  1. Understanding your baseline – your individual energy envelope
  2. Tracking all three dimensions of exertion: physical, cognitive, and emotional
  3. Learning to recognize early warning signs before a crash
  4. Building in active rest – not just passive lying down, but nervous system regulation
  5. Adjusting continuously as your baseline shifts

Written for You – From Someone Who Has Been There

My ebook Beyond Survival is written for people with ME/CFS, Long Covid, and Post-Vac – and for those who care for them. It combines my personal experience as a severely affected person (care level 5) with evidence-based knowledge and practical tools.

Because I believe that the right information, at the right time, in the right tone – can change everything.
