Living with ME/CFS: why survival is just the beginning
If you are reading this, you probably know what it means to fight for every single day. To negotiate with your body. To celebrate making a cup of tea as a victory. Living with ME/CFS or Long Covid means redefining what functioning looks like, and that is one of the hardest things a person can do.
But here is something I have come to believe deeply after years of living with ME/CFS myself: survival is not the endpoint. It is the starting point.
The invisible weight of chronic illness
ME/CFS and Long Covid are not only physical conditions. They touch every dimension of life: relationships, identity, plans, dreams. The person you were before the illness often feels like a stranger. And a medical system that still largely fails to understand these conditions can make you feel invisible.
You are not invisible. Your experience is real, it is valid, and it deserves to be understood. Not only by doctors, but by the people around you and by yourself.
What beyond survival actually means
Beyond survival does not mean recovering the person you were. It does not mean pushing through the illness or ignoring your limits. It means finding a life that is yours, within your real, current capacity. That might look like:
- Finding a pacing strategy that actually works for your life
- Rebuilding a sense of agency and self-efficacy
- Discovering what still brings meaning, even on hard days
- Feeling less alone in your experience
- Understanding your nervous system and learning to work with it, not against it
Pacing: the most important tool you may not be using effectively
Energy management, pacing, is widely recommended for ME/CFS and Long Covid. But most resources explain the concept without showing you how to put it into practice in daily life, with a dysregulated nervous system, variable symptoms and the very real pressure to function.
- Understanding your baseline, your individual energy envelope
- Tracking all three dimensions of exertion: physical, cognitive and emotional
- Learning to recognise early warning signs before a crash
- Building in active rest, not only passive lying down, but nervous system regulation
- Adjusting continuously as your baseline shifts
Written for you, by someone who has been there
Beyond Survival is written for people with ME/CFS, Long Covid and post-vaccine illness, and for the people who care for them. It combines my personal experience as a severely affected person with evidence-based knowledge and practical tools.
Because I believe that the right information, at the right time, in the right tone, can change everything.
